The story behind Legacy of Light
Our dream
Legacy of Light International didn't begin as a grand plan, but as a small seed in the heart. A dream to bring light where darkness reigns and to create opportunities where they are lacking.
The meeting
Two people, two worlds, one vision. Mirjam Bikker from the Netherlands and Jean-Mary Tshikele (Big Sam Upholstery), born in Congo and living in Rundu, Namibia, met online and quickly discovered their shared passion: strengthening communities through education, leadership, and empowerment. What began as a conversation grew into a shared mission.
The first step
During a trip to Rundu, Namibia, the depth of the need became clear—but also the resilience of the people. Children, young people, single mothers, and parents longed for a safe place to learn, grow, and dream. That's where the idea for Legacy of Light was born: a movement that helps people discover their inner strength.
Our vision
We believe that every person carries an inner light. Education means more to us than grades or diplomas. We focus on the whole person—body, mind, and soul. That's why we offer training in mindset, leadership, creativity, and practical life skills.
Our mission in action
- Building a vocational and community center that strengthens communities.
- Workshops and programs that teach people to become self-sufficient.
- An international movement that connects generations through respect, integrity and love.
Our values
- Respect – every human being deserves dignity.
- Integrity – we do what we promise.
- Unity – together we achieve more.
- Responsibility – for ourselves and each other.
- Growth – personal and collective.
- Loyalty – true to our mission.
Together we build a legacy of light
What began as a small dream in Rundu has grown into an international movement today. With every step, we spread light—for ourselves and for generations to come.

Vocational school and community center
In Rundu, Namibia, we've begun building something special: a Vocational School and Community Center. This center is more than just a building—it will be a place where children, young people, parents, and the entire community can come together to learn, grow, and discover new opportunities.
We've already taken the first steps: using local materials, handcrafting bricks, and working with people from the community, we're literally laying the foundations. This project not only provides a future for children but also creates employment and hope for families in the region.
What is a vocational school?
A vocational school, also called a trade or technical school, offers practical education focused on acquiring specific skills and professions. Instead of just theory, students learn with their hands and heart—they develop professional knowledge that they can immediately apply to work, for example, in tailoring, woodworking, agriculture, bricklaying and plastering, beauty care, or upholstery.
At Legacy of Light, we help young people and parents learn real-world skills that will help them build sustainable income and create a strong, self-reliant community.

Meet the founders
The organization was founded by Mirjam Bikker from the Netherlands — Founder & CEO — and Jean-Mary Tshikele from Namibia — Co-Founder and the man who donated the 90 x 130 land on which the project is being realized.
Their meeting was not a coincidence, but a merging of two visions: bringing hope where opportunities are scarce, and strengthening communities through education, craftsmanship and awareness.
